Type 1 Diabetes

Previously known as juvenile diabetes, type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. Only 5-10% of people with diabetes have type 1. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other types of food into energy needed for daily life. Without enough insulin,
too much sugar stays in your bloodstream.

High blood sugar, called hyperglycemia, can
be caused, for example, by eating a larger than usual meal, missing a dose of medication or insulin, being sick, inactive, or even stressed out. To learn more about hyperglycemia, click here.

Low blood sugar, called hypoglycemia, can occur if there is too much insulin in your system, if you have not eaten enough or skipped a meal, or if you have been very active without eating enough carbohydrates. To learn more about hypoglycemia, click here.

Another condition that can be caused by type 1 diabetes is ketoacidosis, associated with hypoglycemia. It occurs when there is too little insulin in the bloodstream to help the sugar get into cells, and the body looks for other kinds of fuel to burn. To learn more about ketoacidosis, click here.
